There are a few things you can do to protect yourself. Although not 100% proof, they do add that extra layer of protection.
First, make sure that you wash your hands frequently and before touching your face for at least 30 seconds with soap and water.
Second, keep yourself in good health. You don’t want your body to be stressed and thus more prone to illness.
Third, limit your contact with sick people. If you do need to be in contact with them, consider wearing a mask of type N95 or better.

Fifth, cough or sneeze into a tissue which you then throw away. If you don’t have one handy, use your arm and not your hands.
