Rheumatism Remedies
Rheumatism, or rheumatic problem is a relatively nonspecific term for various medical problems affecting the joints and connective tissue. Some of the most commonly occurring symptoms of rheumatism problems are chronic, widespread pain, fatigue, and heightened pain in response to pressure. Other symptoms may include tingling of the skin, prolonged muscle spasms, weakness in the limbs, nerve pain, functional bowel disturbance, chronic sleep disturbances and many other. Although the treatment can vary since there are many conditions that could be referred to as rheumatic in nature, there are some medicinal herbs that can help in most cases, and that could be mentioned as rheumatism remedies. In this article we will mention two most well known remedies: Stinging nettle and horsetail.
The first of the mentioned, stinging nettle (Urtica dioica and also Urtica urens) is a very common herb. This herb is a bicameral plant with usually relatively large roots. The stalk is upright and can reach up to 1.5 meters. The leaves are opposite, heart-shaped, pointed and have short shanks. Leaves and branches are covered by stinging hairs. When these hairs are touched they can cause mild burns or swelling of the skin. The branches can carry male or female flowers. The flowers are usually green colored. The propagation of nettle is mainly based on wind, and the fruits that are the result are relatively small, shaped in the form of tiny seeds. The stinging nettle blooms from July to September and usually grows on neglected places along with other weeds. For medicinal purposes, in spring and autumn, the roots are gathered. Also, in the spring, the leaves and the tops of the branches are gathered. The seeds are collected in August and September.
Nettle has many uses in herbal medicine: it is used to clean the body from various toxins. Tea of herbal remedies such as nettle is used to reduce the lung mucus, clean the stomach, liver and intestines, and is also an excellent remedy for the treatment of anemia, hemorrhoids, hepatitis, malaria and other fevers. Along with all the mentioned effects, it is also known to be a good herbal remedy against the condition that you are, as the reader of this article, most interested in – rheumatism.
The second one is even more known and used – horsetail (Equisetum arvense). Horsetail is a relatively common, resistant and widespread weed. People often have more trouble getting rid of this plant, than finding it in the first place. However, if one is having trouble finding this plant, it mostly grows on places with sandy soil, on meadows and dunes. It grows in form of a upright stem with thin leaves that grow from single places on the stem. It blooms in the spring.
For medicinal purposes, horsetail is usually collected in the late spring. Not only is it good for treating rheumatic problems, but it is also known to reduce cough and leg swelling. It is also often a part of herbal tea mixtures that are used for general body cleansing. It is also good for treating anemia, because it can increase the production of red blood cells in the body. It has also been used in the treatment of ulcers and for certain diseases of the urinary system.
These are just some of the many herbal remedies that can help in preventing and treating rheumatic problems, and they can be used each on its own, or for even better effects, one can prepare a herbal mixture, by mixing same amounts of every of the above mentioned herbs. This mixture can than be taken few times per day, throughout the period when one has rheumatic problems.
