Swine Flu Type a (H1N1) – What You Can Do to Protect Yourself

Swine flu, influenza A (H1N1), is almost at all out pandemic alert status. As of this writing (April 30, 2009), the alert level is at 5. The highest is 6.

How Is It Transmitted?

You can catch it from a sick pig. Once it infects a human though, it spreads much quicker from person to person. It then becomes air-borne when someone sneezes or coughs. So if you happen to be around someone who has it, you should get yourself checked if you start feeling ill.

It is perfectly safe to eat properly cooked pork. You cannot get it from that.

Are There Herbal Remedies For Swine Flu?

This is a relatively new influenza strain. It’s a combination of pig, avian, and human flu. Hydrogen peroxide has been shown to work against seasonal flus. So that might work. But only if you start at the onset of symptoms. But, do your due diligence as this is a potent liquid and can burn you if you’re not careful.

Swine Flu Prevention

There are a few things you can do to protect yourself. Although not 100% proof, they do add that extra layer of protection.

First, make sure that you wash your hands frequently and before touching your face for at least 30 seconds with soap and water.
Second, keep yourself in good health. You don’t want your body to be stressed and thus more prone to illness.
Third, limit your contact with sick people. If you do need to be in contact with them, consider wearing a mask of type N95 or better.

Fourth, avoid large crowds. You never know who has what and where they have been.
Fifth, cough or sneeze into a tissue which you then throw away. If you don’t have one handy, use your arm and not your hands.

Don’t Get Paranoid Now!

Even though more and more places are reporting it, don’t automatically think you have it just because you feel flu-like symptoms. It may very well be a seasonal flu.

So, use your best judgment!
